Analyze Naphtha Quality in Crude Distillation Unit

The quality of fractions from the CDU (crude distillation unit) need to be continuously monitored, assuring the refinery that it is maintaining peak performance from the column while controlling product quality to downstream units.

Naphtha is the lightest and highest quality hydrocarbon drawn off the top of the column. Because it has very low levels of impurities, naphtha normally has a clear, “water-white” visual appearance. The quality of naphtha is measured using the Saybolt ASTM D156 color testing standard as well as other methods. High quality naphtha typically measures in the +28 to +30 Saybolt color range whereby +30 is the highest measurable quality.
